New PSFT show a Foster gem
By Doug Avram
For the Times-Journal
Combine four incredible talents with one of Norm Fosterís great scripts, stir vigorously with a vivacious, dynamic and intelligent director, put entire mixture onto a beautiful set, turn on lights and sound and what do you get? A fantastic evening of theatre that promises to be one of the best of the summer season anywhere.
The Port Stanley Festival Theatre is presenting Fosterís adult comedy The Long Weekend about two married couples on a weekend getaway. The truth and lies of a friendship come to the surface during a weekend visit between the two couples and there are plenty of surprises along the way in this biting comedy of manners.
The script is one of Fosterís best and to add spice to the production, both Foster and his wife Janet Monid, join Leisa Way and David Nairn as the stars of this production. PSFT Artistic Director Rona Waddington moulds the gifted talent these four actors bring to the production into a tight, well-paced, expertly-timed play. Waddington adds her own special touches that enhance the production by adding colour and depth to each character and situation.
One of Fosterís main strengths as a playwright is his mastery and love of words. His script gives the characters a wonderful gift of great wordsmithing to create character as well as humour. The situations are fun in themselves and the expert development of each character endears each of the four stars to the audience.
There is always the possibility that a great acting talent can overshadow the others on stage, but in The Long Weekend, audiences will see the result of four great acting talents enhancing each other and creating a truly enjoyable and funny play.
The set by Eric Brunnell is imaginative and gives the complete impression of a cottage/home usually found in the Muskokas. His use of colours and textures is especially pleasing to the story line and characters.
Fosterís plays have proven to be audience favourites and The Long Weekend will continue that tradition. The Long Weekend runs until June 28íth. Ticket information and reservations can be made by calling the PSFT Box Office at 782-4353.
